  3. After 15 minutes (or some lentils types might take 5-10 minutes more) add a handful of cracked wheat or rice after you rinse it, cumin, salt and the fried onion along with its oil
  4. You can then add another cup or two of water if all the water you’ve added first has already gone.
  5. Leave for another 15 minutes and keep mixing every 3 minutes until you get this texture like in the photo below

It makes a perfect meal with a fresh green salad. Transfer the lentils to a colander and save the excess liquid. To caramelize the onions: In a wide skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat.
